"...the archetypes, are as it were the hidden foundations of the conscious mind, or, to use another comparison, the roots which the psyche has sunk not only in the earth in the narrowest sense but in the world in general. Archetypes are systems of readiness for action, and at the same time images and emotions. They are inherited with the brain-structure--indeed, they are its psychic aspect. They represent, on the one hand, a very strong instinctive conservatism, while on the other hand they are the most effective means conceivable of instinctive adaptation. They are thus, essentially, the chthonic portion of the psyche, if we may use such an expression--that portion through which the psyche is attached to nature, or in which its link with the earth and the world appears at its most tangible. The psychic influence of the earth and its laws is seen most clearly in these primordial images."

--CG Jung, "Mind and Earth", CW. 10 para. 53.

Upcoming Events at the Library

The Robin Jaqua Archetypal Library will be offering a 10-week series of film and discussion during Winter term. The series will explore the archetypal dimension of myth, story, and symbol using Joseph Campbell's lecture series "The Power of Myth" as a framework.

The series will focus on a variety of archetypal motifs as they emerge in contemporary and classic cinema, and explore psychological dynamics as understood through the lens of archetypal psychology as developed by Carl Jung. Topics will include, among others The Hero's Journey, The Great Goddess, The Shadow, Sacrifice, and Redemption. Sessions will alternate between Campbell's lectures and film discussions illustrating the lecture material.

The first session will be Friday, January 13th from 1:30-4 in the Robin Jaqua Archetypal Library on the 2nd floor of the HEDCO building. The group will meet weekly on Friday afternoons. For discussions of the weekly sessions and previews of upcoming series topics, go to the UO Campus Library page.
